Sometimes blankets get wet

Sometimes blankets get wet | overthinking and control

📓 Wednesday, May 6, 2026 — 8:25 p.m.
I used to think more thinking would solve everything.

Rumination.

If I replayed the problem enough…

maybe I’d eventually land on the answer.

But it doesn’t work like that.

Too much thinking just traps you in loops.

Thinking.

More thinking.

No action.

That became clearer to me last night.

My dad was watering the grass.

At night.

Something he never really used to do.

Scooby—my sister’s dog—was locked in his kennel next to the hose.

And he wouldn’t stop barking.

Scooby likes fighting the water.

The more he barked…

the more irritated my dad got.

You could feel the friction building.

Eventually Scooby got let out.

My sister got home later that night and saw his blankets soaked.

“Omg, why are Scooby’s blankets wet?”

But Scooby was free.

That was the win.

Before she got home, my dad kept saying:

“Don’t let him loose. He’s gonna muddy the yard.”

And I said:

“I’ll clean it up if he does. I’ll take responsibility.”

Sitting there…

I realized something.

I’ve seen this pattern my whole life.

Control everything.

And when friction appears…

blow up.

And honestly?

I think I used to do the same thing mentally.

Try to control every outcome through thinking.

But life doesn’t work that way.

Sometimes things get messy.

Sometimes blankets get wet.

And sometimes the better move…

is to stop trying to control everything

and just deal with what happens next.

💬 Reader question

Do you think overthinking is really about fear… or about control?
