I’m writing tonight and wondering: how much can I do this year? Will I do anything this year that this life—this avatar—can look back on and say, I’m proud of what I did?

Today I’ve been dealing with what might be a sinus infection. I feel a sting in the upper part of my throat near my nasal area. So I tried to rest… even though “rest” came after doing what I do: making a couple sales of plastic and paper cases, then going to pick up 25 cases of paper bags. I got home around 4 p.m.

Now I’m back in my garage/studio, sitting in my blue chair with a blanket over my legs. The ottoman is to my left so Simba can lay next to me. He insists on laying on my legs anyway.

My sister went to work in downtown L.A. with our cousin in an office building. And I’m happy for her. Truly happy for her.

She’s suffered through depression and not feeling like she’s enough. So I root for her to keep going—keep redefining herself through her actions.

I’ve suffered through deep depression too. I assume a lot of people have, and a lot of people will. Depression can feel like a vice grip on your soul. Like you’re married to negativity, like it’s the definition of who you are.

But that’s a lie.

You are your actions—what you do daily—not just what you think or what happened to you.

So tonight I root for my sister. I call her ‘Triple 9s’ because her birthday is all nines. And I root for myself too.

Reader Question: What’s one action you can take this week that proves you’re not your worst thoughts?
