Nervous.

Tonight I pick up my orange furball, Simba, from the vet.

I appreciate him more than he probably realizes.

Coffee is brewed.

Time to start the day.

The film I’d choose is The Tree of Life starring Brad Pitt.

The first time I watched it, I didn’t know much about it.

I knew who the actors were.

That was about it.

By the end of the film I understood something.

Movies have layers.

There’s the surface layer.

The story.

The characters.

The plot.

The explosions.

The horror.

The things happening directly in front of you.

Then there’s another layer underneath.

The symbols.

The visual ideas.

The things the film is showing you without explaining them.

The things you don’t notice until the second or third viewing.

Every rewatch seems to open another thought.

Another interpretation.

Another question.

It reminds me of a line from Dark:

“The beginning is the end and the end is the beginning.”

That feeling.

The circle of life.

Not explained.

Shown.

The visuals in The Tree of Life still amaze me.

Later I watched the supplements and learned that Terrence Malick and his team mixed chemicals together to create images that looked like galaxies being born.

Then they filmed them in slow motion.

That’s the kind of thing I love about cinema.

Not just telling a story.

Creating an experience.

Creating images that stay with you years later.
