“zThe Cave and the Flashlight”

Daily writing prompt
Do you need a break? From what?

Yeah. I think I’ve needed a break for a long time—mostly from internal stress.

Everybody’s internal stress is different. There’s the external stress, and then there’s the one inside your head that never shuts up. I’m no different than anybody else.

For a long time, I fucked up my life. I made bad decisions when I was younger. I believed the wrong people. I didn’t believe in myself. And a lot of those bad decisions were backed by the same dumb thought: things aren’t gonna work out for me anyway, so why even try?

So I didn’t give myself a real chance.

Then I spent a decade trying to change it. I went back to school in my 30s. It took years. And yeah—there’s no clear “artist job” waiting for me just because I got a degree.

But school did teach me something important: I can do what I say. And even when things don’t work out the exact way you want, they can still work out—if you keep going and keep asking, what’s the next step?

That’s how I see it: like you’re in a cave with a flashlight. Wherever you point the light, you might—hopefully—find the next path that gets you the fuck out.

And I’ve learned this too: I’m not more special than anybody else. I’m not worse than anybody else. I’m one of millions of humans on this planet battling every day in some form. People assume money means no problems. Sometimes that’s true. Sometimes it’s not. There are too many variables.

We wear the mask of our face, but nobody knows what the fuck is happening inside our heads.

Question: What kind of internal stress have you been carrying—and what would a real break look like?
