THE BLADE

South Central – Past Ten

A strip of Figueroa that, in daylight, is just another stretch in South Central — schools, mechanic shops, liquor stores. The women — ladies of the night, the blade’s own night shift — are there too, scattered like shadows in daylight.

At night, those shadows grow and overtake the streets.

At night, it becomes their world.

These streets have stories.

The truth about these stories is simple: they happened. They could happen to me. To you. To anyone.

How I know them? That’s for you to figure out. Maybe I was there. Maybe I know somebody who knows somebody. Maybe I’m just the one they talk to when they need to let something out. You never know.

One night, a little past ten, I cut through a side street. A young Black woman walked back toward the blade — B-L-A-D-E — almost naked. Thong, breasts out, head high like it didn’t matter who saw. Out here, that’s just the uniform. You think about what she could’ve been, and instead, here she is.

Is this her happiness now? Or is it just her reality — accepted?

She walked without a care in the world.

I’ve seen the street shut down by cops, blue and red lights bleeding into the night. I’ve seen a car flipped on its side, sirens screaming, ambulance parked at the corner. And just a block away? A girl leaning into the window of another car. Business as usual. That’s how it works — when something goes down, they shift over a street and the money keeps moving.

Sometimes the cars line up bumper to bumper, crawling through blocks throughout the strip like a slow-moving river. Doesn’t matter if it’s hot, cold, or if chaos just broke loose — a new spot always opens, and the cycle keeps turning.

🥷 You don’t have to believe. You can ignore it. But if you knew… would you believe it happens?
