“The Knock”

One morning you wake up, and every forgotten version of yourself is waiting outside your door. None of them want to replace you. They just want five minutes. Who knocks first?

July 15, 2026

Sky this morning is blue.

With light haze at the bottom.

Sometimes it’s fun to imagine.

Imagine…

The sky lighting up as if flowing with its own rhythm.

Coffee has brewed.

Knock.

Knock.

“Hello.”

“Hello.”

Laying in bed.

While trying to open my eyes. Someone speaks… faintly can hear it.

“Hello.”

Damn…

I missed my alarm.

“Hello.”

Mmm…

Who the hell is at my door?

No one ever visits my door.

Funny…

I have a door with a finger scan.

Opening my chamber.

Whoa…

I must be having one of those dreams within a dream.

I’ve always heard…

Some people can wake while dreaming.

This dream feels to real.

“Roberto?”

“Yes… it’s me.

Well…

It’s also you.

I know…

It can be confusing.”

What the fuck.

About to close the door.

Heart rate going up.

“Don’t.

Don’t close this door.

I am real.

And this is real.”

It feels like that day.

That day my father hollered at me through the driveway window.

“Your grandmother has passed.

She didn’t make it through surgery.”

A chill down my spine.

Slowly…

I begin to open my door.

“How can this be?”

“Life…

Can be mysterious.”

“May I come in?”

I stumble a bit…

As he comes inside my studio.

“Me and you are one.

There are also others.”

“Others?”

“I don’t have enough time.”

His face was mine…

But now I noticed…

It’s not quite me.

He looks way younger.

“I don’t have much time.

Your life echoes through time.

A ripple is always created.

Every motion is a note composed in your song.

You are a composer.

I am one of your notes.”

“What the fuck are you saying?

What do you want?”

“Our grandmother passed away when we were a boy.

Remember.”

“Fuck!

Fuck you.

You’re scaring the shit out of me.”

Tears begin to slightly appear on his face.

“She loved us.

We love her.

I know every day you dream…

Of who you could have been.

And…

You see no point.

She would always watch the Rocky movies with us.

Remember…

‘You are bound by nothing,’

she used to say.

I begin to cry.

I miss her.

“I am here to remind you.

Remind you…

I am a ripple of your song that remembers the love of our grandmother.

The love you had for your future.”

He began to walk to the door.

“Roberto…

Remember…

Remember…

To love your future…

Again.”

The door closes.

Knock.

Knock.

Knock.

Question

If a forgotten version of yourself knocked on your door today… what would it remind you of?
