“Marcus Aurelius felt human to me”

Daily writing prompt
If you could have dinner with any philosopher, who would it be?

📓 May 18, 2026 — 8:28 a.m.

Sitting in my chair.

Watching YouTube videos about the reMarkable tablet I bought yesterday.

It won’t even turn on.

So now I gotta go to Best Buy and probably exchange it.

Beautiful.

Anyway…

philosophers.

I don’t know if people officially call him a philosopher…

but mine would be Marcus Aurelius.

What impressed me wasn’t just his writing.

It was the fact that the writing wasn’t meant for us.

His journal was for himself.

That changes everything.

Because when you read it…

you’re not reading somebody trying to sound wise.

You’re reading a man trying to deal with his own mind.

And somehow…

that makes him feel more human.

This was a guy running an empire.

Making impossible decisions.

Carrying pressure most people couldn’t imagine.

And yet…

inside the journal…

he still sounds like another human being trying to figure life out.

That stayed with me.

Because maybe wisdom isn’t sounding perfect.

Maybe wisdom is being honest enough to question yourself while still moving forward.

And honestly?

I think that’s why his words still connect all these years later.

💬 Reader question

Do you think people connect more to perfection… or to seeing someone honestly struggle?

If this felt real… I write moments like this.

  1. “When you arise in the morning, think of what a precious privilege it is to be alive – to breathe, to think, to enjoy, to love.” My favorite Marcus Aurelius quote. There was a time when reading it daily helped me make it through the day. Thanks for the reminder.

    1. As one human to another, I think we all need reminders sometimes. We echo similar moments through time more than we realize. And maybe part of being alive is remembering that, for a little while, we get to experience this strange adventure together before our paths drift elsewhere. Wishing you a beautiful day too.
