“I Saw Lord of the Rings in Theaters. I Also Slept Through It.”

📓 Tuesday, March 31, 2026 — 1:30 p.m.
I saw the first Lord of the Rings the year it came out.

Pasadena. Theater packed.

Back when movies still had that film feeling to them —

not digital, not clean, not perfect.

Real projection.

Real light.

Real event.

And I loved it.

I remember walking out of that first one feeling like I had gone somewhere.

It was long, yeah, but it earned its length.

I couldn’t wait for part two.

I was in.

Middle-earth had me.

So when the second one came out, I bought my ticket, sat down, and locked in.

Then I woke up.

Credits.

That was it.

I had slept through the movie like some kind of cursed extra.

I don’t know where I left.

I don’t know where I came back.

I just remember opening my eyes like I had been resurrected by the soundtrack.

So by the time part three came out, I told myself it didn’t matter.

I had missed the second one, sure, but I’d catch the vibe.

I’d figure it out.

Movies do that sometimes.

They carry you.

Same theater ritual.

Same commitment.

Same belief.

Same nap.

I woke up when the crown was being placed on his head.

Everybody around me was clapping like they had survived a war together,

and I was sitting there like a man who had been unconscious through history.

To this day, I have never fully seen part two or part three.

I went to the theater.

I bought the tickets.

I was physically present when cinematic history happened.

And somehow…

in my version of Lord of the Rings,

everything important happens while I’m asleep.

What’s something you were “there” for… but somehow missed anyway?
