“The Day the Freeways Were Empty”

Daily writing prompt
How have you adapted to the changes brought on by the Covid-19 pandemic?

There was one strange positive during COVID.

The freeways were empty.

I do deliveries all over Los Angeles—

the 110, the 405, the 10.

Usually, they’re so packed…

if you breathe, you’ll smell somebody else’s breath.

That’s how bad it gets.

But during that time?

It was smooth.

You could go from point A to point B in no time.

It felt like you were Quicksilver—just flying through the city.

It almost felt like an apocalypse.

Like you were the last person left.

And honestly?

I didn’t mind it.

Then, slowly… everything came back.

Traffic.

People being people.

Like nothing ever happened.

That’s the weird part.

Something that big happened…

and now it’s like it never did.

The only thing that stuck, maybe, is small.

Some people still wear masks.

I remember this girl at Cal State Long Beach—

this was before COVID.

She used to wear a mask to class.

I called her “the ninja.”

She laughed.

I asked her why she wore it.

She said,

“I have a cold. My mom told me to wear it.”

A week later…

COVID hit.

Reader question

What’s something that felt like it changed everything… but somehow didn’t?
