“A Van, a GameStop, and a Chai Tea”

I’m sitting in my van, lit up on the left by this harsh streetlight. In front of me is a Jamba Juice. To the left, an IHOP. To the right, a GameStop.

Lately I’ve been trying to draw Los Angeles the way it actually feels in my head instead of the way it looks in photographs. This was a street vendor from the neighborhood—translated through my viewfinder.

This GameStop has been here forever. I used to buy a shitload of games here when I was 23, 24. A long time ago. And it’s weird seeing it still standing when business isn’t what it used to be—not just for GameStop, but for everything.

I didn’t sell that much today in bags. But between yesterday and today I threw a shitload of flyers—about 30. Maybe I made some new clients. We’ll see.

I’m tired.

And I don’t want to get depressed because that shit doesn’t help. Depression is like lack of energy, and I need all the energy I can get.

So I did a small morale move.

I bought a Starbucks tea: Brewed Chai Tea (hot), no sweetener, a splash of almond milk… and those little bites they sell. I can’t remember the name right now—something “bites.” It doesn’t fix life, but it helps me keep the engine running.

And it also makes me laugh that I’ve been writing so much.

I keep telling myself, I’m not a writer, because it still doesn’t make sense that I’m writing at all. But here I am—typing on my MacBook Pro with it sitting on top of the metal box I use for my little thermal printer. Thermo paper. Sunglasses. Deodorant. The whole mobile office setup.

And sometimes the thought hits me: why the fuck do I do this? Who’s going to read a guy who sells plastic bags?

Then I remember: I’m not writing because it’s popular. I’m writing because it keeps me from going numb.

I’m gonna head home soon.

Plástico man moveth.

Question: When you’re tired and the day didn’t hit, what’s your small move to keep your morale up?
