If I had to compare myself to an animal, I wouldn’t start with strength or speed.
I’d start with love.
My dog Goldie passed away in July of 2024.
She was a small Tibetan–Cocker Spaniel mix. Blonde. Soft. I used to call her my G Money.
Losing her broke something in me.
Now it’s just me and Simba — my orange furball.
I love him deeply too.
If I could be any animal, I think I’d choose cat.
Not because it’s powerful.
Not because it’s wild.
Because it knows how to rest.
Cats don’t apologize for slowing down.
They don’t measure their worth by how much they produce.
They stretch. They sleep. They sit in sunlight. They exist.
My life feels hectic.
Constant movement. Constant responsibility.
Sometimes I forget how to just be.
So maybe I’d choose cat —
to learn how to pause inside my own life
without guilt.
And if I’m lucky,
to be loved the way I loved Goldie
and the way I love Simba.
Reader question: If you could borrow one trait from an animal to improve your life, what would it be?
