Writing Prompt

What Would I Keep If I Had To Leave In Five Minutes

August 4, 2026 – 6:09 p.m.

I heard a story today…

It was odd.

“I drove to my friend’s house. They’re dwarfs… except for the wife. She’s a giant… literally seven feet tall.”

Ahh…

Well…

that’s one way to start your day.

I’ve been told in the past that I seemed like someone people knew.

Maybe from a prior life…

or maybe our paths crossed somewhere in their timeline.

Who knows.

I love walking outside late at night when the air is cool.

Not cold…

cool.

Sometimes I’ll lay on the pavement in the driveway.

Hands stretched out…

almost like being self-crucified.

Well…

not strapped down…

just lying there.

Looking up.

Black sky.

The stars moving like a kaleidoscope.

Every so often…

a plane passes overhead.

I live near LAX in Los Angeles.

I exist now.

At one point…

I didn’t.

One day…

I won’t.

I think about things like that while looking up.

I ask myself weird-ass questions.

I ponder weird-ass thoughts.

But it’s relaxing.

The pavement is still a little warm…

the breeze is cool…

and sometimes…

it just makes me smile.

Fuck…

it’s been hot during the day.

Last night I was outside again.

Not lying on the pavement this time.

Walking.

Walking around the block.

Another favorite activity of mine.

As I walked…

I started thinking about mortality.

My pet will die.

My parents will die.

Then…

me.

For the first time…

I didn’t feel sad.

I accepted it.

So then I wondered…

if nothing lasts…

and nothing is ever fixed long enough…

then what matters?

To me…

I am not a writer.

I have bad thoughts.

I write randomly.

I like listening to a beat while I write.

And lately…

I’ve been enjoying writing in a journal.

A digital journal.

It’s a reMarkable tablet about the size of a small notebook.

It syncs to the cloud if I want to save everything outside the device.

So…

if I had to leave in five minutes…

I’d take my reMarkable.

Maybe because…

that’s where I’ve slowly been finding myself.

Enjoy your cup of coffee.

Question

If you had five minutes to leave your home forever, what would you take… and why?
