Firstā¦
Good morning.
Iāve struggled with feeling like being a droplet dumped into a sink without anyone noticing.
When I was in high schoolā¦
I wanted to make a varsity team in any sport.
I had never been able to because of my grades.
I always held myself back.
Eventually, I stopped seeing school as something worth trying anymore.
Before high school, I never questioned itā¦
but all of a sudden, a switch turned on.
Why take Social Studies?
Algebra?
Speech?
Physical Education?
I loved artā¦
so art class I passed.
Then I decided to try out for the cross-country team.
Somehowā¦
I made the varsity team.
It was my senior year.
I was so happy.
One day, the team drove to the Griffith Park area near the Los Angeles Zoo to run a course for practice.
It got lateā¦
and I slowly fell behind.
Eventuallyā¦
I couldnāt see the team anymore.
I made it back to where the vans had been parkedā¦
and they were gone.
Long story shortā¦
they forgot about me.
They didnāt even remember I was there.
I was nobody to the teamā¦
and nobody to the coaches.
Looking backā¦
I think school often felt that way.
It was linear.
Get students in.
Get students out.
Then bring in the next group.
Sometimesā¦
I wish schools spent more time trying to learn who their students actually are.
A curriculum is built as if every student is the same person.
But weāre not.
Maybe thatās something school could teach tooā¦
that people arenāt standardized.
Morningā¦
Off to brew my cup of coffee.
ā Enjoy your cup of coffee.
