”Just Try ”

The Last Thing They Ever Said to Me

It wasn’t dramatic.

It wasn’t important.

At least…

not at the time.

July 19, 2026

I look at time constantly.

Not just because I am aging…

but because of how precious it can really be.

I am learning to appreciate people.

Many moons ago, I worked for a man named Don Orlando.

A Salvadoran businessman.

An inventor.

And a conspiracy theorist on the side.

He made his own chorizo.

He had his own construction business.

He owned a lunch truck.

He even experimented with making his own cheese using germs he imported.

I worked for him for three years.

He would always tell me,

“You should start your own business.”

I’d laugh.

“I am not you, Don Orlando.”

He’d smile.

“You have hands, legs, and a mind.

You can do anything another human can do.

Just try.”

At the time…

I didn’t think much of those words.

He passed away last Christmas.

Sometimes…

people leave us long before we understand the value of what they gave us.

Maybe…

that was the last thing he ever gave me.

I’m not a genius.

Maybe…

I don’t have to be.

Maybe…

I just have to try.

Good morning, world.

And truly…

enjoy your day.
