”The Invisible Objects”

Every person carries one invisible object that represents the thing they never recovered from. One day, for the first time, everyone can suddenly see everyone else’s. What are people carrying? And what are you carrying?

Click…

Click…

Click…

It echoes constantly…

The vibrato rises…

We…

Do not see it.

“You see this cat…

I love him more than I love you.”

Now…

2 a.m.

I’m walking.

No one is out.

The streets are lit in golden light.

I see my cold breath rise…

Then disappear.

“I found someone else.

I want to try with him.”

Everything is on a loop.

I am not enough.

I could hear the LAPD helicopter off in the distance.

Dogs barking.

A cat…

His face half white.

Half black.

Staring directly into my eyes.

Not moving.

Tears begin.

I stop.

I don’t want to be here anymore.

“Hey, Roberto.”

Who would be calling my name…

At this hour…

In the middle of a random street?

I turn.

An elderly Black man.

Gray beard.

Tears in his eyes.

“I lost my wife last year to cancer.

Brother…

I know cheating sucks.

But…

You’ll find a wife one day.

That was just a passerby.”

Then…

I just…

Remember.

“Was your wife’s name Abigail?

She loved when you’d tell her…

’I love you now.

I’ll love you always.’”

I never met either of these people.

I just knew.

Slowly…

Lights began flickering on inside people’s homes.

People began walking outside.

“Roberto…

You’re gonna be fine.”

A female voice.

The neighbor no one had ever heard speak…

Walked toward me wearing a red hoodie.

She looked to be in her thirties.

Bright blue eyes.

2 a.m…

But now…

The whole block was outside.

WTF.

Question

If you could suddenly see the invisible thing everyone carries… what do you think you’d notice first?
