”The Ottoman”

You return home one night and discover that one object in your room has been moved—but nobody admits touching it. What was moved, and what memory does its new position disturb?

July 12, 2026
(Giant) Jack and the Beanstalk.

This comes to my mind.

No apparent reason…

Maybe it’s me telling me,

“You need to climb upwards, but you are too small.”

Back in my studio.

Legs crossed on top of my blue ottoman.

I’ve only owned it for two years.

Nothing special.

Me too.

Giant…

Not me.

Blue ottoman.

Light blue with a tint of gray.

I think right now…

What if my square studio was a rectangle?

The ottoman could fit better.

Like a Tetris piece.

My legs crossed.

Resting on top of my ottoman.

It provides warmth.

Comfort.

Maybe it even helps the circulation in my legs.

I’ve passed out with my legs resting on top of it.

I’ve never owned an ottoman before.

It’s square.

So…

Let it remain square…

Inside my imaginary rectangular studio.

It usually rests underneath my desk to my left.

Whenever I want that little bit of elevation…

With a little warmth on my legs…

I pull out my ottoman.

If it were ever gone…

I hope someone else would enjoy its warmth…

While they rested.

Question

What’s one ordinary object in your home that quietly became part of your daily life before you ever noticed it?
