“Valid doesn’t mean useful”

📓 Tuesday, April 21, 2026 — 7:22 p.m.

I’m working on loosening up my drawing.

I’ve been inconsistent.

Some of my excuses are valid.

But valid doesn’t mean useful.

It doesn’t help me execute the goal.

So I focus on the goal:

Get good enough to get paid.

I have a degree that says I’m an artist.

Reality says I’m not.

Not yet.

Today I practiced fast.

No overthinking.

Just using my eye.

This morning, my alarm went off.

I thought about taking the day off.

Instead…

I chose to move forward.

I have obvious weaknesses.

Perspective.
Planes of the face.
Flow of the figure.
Memory.

I can capture what I see.

The rest takes time.

Before, I would’ve beaten myself up.

Now I don’t.

I just put the time in.

Some days I’m exhausted.

Working the bag business all day.

Passing out in the chair.

My mind says:

“That’s a good excuse.”

Reality says:

“It doesn’t matter.”

Even if it’s true…

it doesn’t move me forward.

So I adjust.

I work with my life.

Not wait for life to bend around me.

💬 Reader question

What’s one “valid” excuse you keep using… that isn’t actually helping you move forward?
