I watched Project Hail Mary… and it made me think differently about art
Last night I watched Project Hail Mary at Cinepolis in Inglewood.
6:15 p.m. on a Monday.
I didn’t expect it to be packed… but it was.
I hadn’t seen the trailer.
Just heard it was good, so I said, let’s see what’s up.
A family of five sat in front of me.
To my left, an Indian couple.
To my right, two girls who looked like friends.
When the lights went down, the girl next to me pulled out a bowl of soup from her bag… and a bag of chips.
That made me laugh.
⸻
Then the movie started.
There’s a character named Rocky.
And Rocky made me think.
He’s basically a rock that moves like a crab.
But after a while… you stop seeing what he is.
You start feeling who he is.
And that hit me.
Maybe character design isn’t just about making something look cool or beautiful.
Maybe it’s about whether it carries presence.
Rhythm.
Something alive.
⸻
At the beginning of the film, I also started thinking about my own life.
I keep saying I want to end the year strong.
That I want this year to turn out well.
But sitting there…
I realized maybe that’s too far away.
Maybe the question is simpler:
Can I make next month better than March?
⸻
As an artist, I feel like I’m on a mission.
And for some reason, because Rocky was such a big part of the film, my mind went back to Rocky II.
That moment with Adrian.
When she calls something back into him.
That scene always stayed with me.
Because it’s not really about motivation.
It’s about that moment when a person stops drifting…
and decides to step back into life.

What’s something small you can make better next month?

If this hit you… you can stay. I’m building this little by little.
