“Roberto Sánchez: Bright Fame and the “Crazy” Side”

Daily writing prompt
Write about your first name: its meaning, significance, etymology, etc.

My mom says she got the name Roberto from a boyfriend she used to have. So I’m assuming she didn’t tell my dad that. LOL.

At first I was supposed to be Roberto Carlos Sánchez — Carlos being my dad’s oldest brother, who has since passed away from cirrhosis. I don’t know what happened behind the scenes, but I ended up with Roberto and my dad’s last name, Sánchez.

And according to what I just looked up online (LOL), Roberto is the Spanish/Italian form of Robert, coming from roots that mean “fame” and “bright.” So Roberto basically means bright fame.

Sánchez is a patronymic last name meaning “son of Sancho.” And Sancho—not that kind of Sancho—traces back to the Latin Sanctius, tied to holy / sacred.

So “Roberto Sánchez” is basically:

bright fame + son of Sancho (sacred/holy).

And then there’s the family part.

In my family lore, the Sánchez side is known as the “crazy” side. Everything pisses them off. Everything feels personal. Anger. Frustration. Arguments. Fighting. LOL.

So I’m Roberto — a name linked to one of my mom’s old boyfriends — and I’m Sánchez — the side of the family that’s known for being… intense.

That’s all I got, dude.

Question: Do you know the story behind your name—and does it fit you?
