“Don’t Marry Your Political Views”

Daily writing prompt
How have your political views changed over time?

I think I’ve become more conservative than liberal. Not because I think “my side” is better, but because I’ve started to value guardrails.

To me, being too liberal can be like deciding you can eat whatever you want, however you want. That isn’t automatically bad. The problem is most of us are undisciplined, so we go overboard. That’s why so many people end up out of shape—no structure, no limits, no standards.

So for me, conservatism feels like structure that makes sense. That doesn’t mean everybody should believe what I believe. It just means it works better for me.

I’m also learning it’s easy to get married to your political views, and I think that’s one of the biggest problems we have. People treat politics like identity. Like if you don’t agree with me, I hate you.

And I hate that.

From what I’ve seen recently, people were celebrating a public figure’s death, and it hit me how quickly politics can turn into hate. Like damn… that’s where we’re at? lol. That’s a political view becoming a sentence of hate, and I don’t like that.

Even when someone’s views are different from mine, I don’t want to celebrate their downfall or their suffering. I might hate an idea, but I don’t want to hate people. People have their own reasons for how they see life—different backgrounds, different upbringings, different factors. When you take all that into the equation, your viewfinder shapes what you feel and believe is reality. Even if I disagree with it, I still think we can be cordial. We can still be human.

I think the best we can do is be respectful, appreciate each other a little more, and have more grace. We judge people too quickly based on politics. That’s my opinion.

Question: Have your political views changed over time—and what “guardrails” do you think actually help?
