“The same message found me twice”

Daily writing prompt
Describe a random encounter with a stranger that stuck out positively to you.

It’s 9:14 in the morning.

I’m tired.

About to drink my coffee…

and something came back to me.

Years ago, I worked at LAX.

Wheelchair agent.

Pushing people in and out of flights.

Did that for a couple years when I didn’t know what the hell I was doing with my life.

One day, I was waiting by the corridor.

Waiting for the plane to open so we could go in and pick up passengers.

Just standing there.

This older man walked up next to me.

Late 50s, maybe 60.

Didn’t know him.

He just started talking.

“You need a foundation if you want to build anything.”

That’s what he told me.

I wasn’t really listening.

I just wanted to be left alone, look at my phone.

So I brushed it off.

Years later…

I’m in Cancun with my cousin.

She’s building a house out there.

I meet her aunt.

She starts talking to me.

And out of nowhere, she tells me:

“If you want to do something with your life… you need a strong foundation.”

Same message.

That’s when it hit me.

I had heard this before.

And I ignored it the first time.

Now I’m starting to understand it.

Everything I’m trying to build right now—

my habits

my money

my writing

my art

That’s the foundation.

And without it…

nothing holds.
