When I was a kid, my grandmother always told me I was her favorite grandson.
The funny thing is, if you add up all the days I ever spent with her, it might only equal about a month.
But every one of those days felt special.
She passed away when I was around nine years old from complications during surgery.
One thing she always talked about was taking a long train trip.
She never got to.
She also always wanted to visit Las Vegas.
She never got to do that either.
So if I were going on a cross-country trip, I’d choose the train.
Not the plane.
The train moves slower.
You get to see the country change outside the window.
And somewhere along that trip I’d like to imagine she’d be there with me.
Not physically.
But in memory.
I’ve also always wanted to visit Europe.
Funny thing is, I’m already an older man and I’ve never been.
What a shame.
But if I ever do go…
I think I’d still take the train.
