Because of deliveries, I don’t always have a lot of free time during the day.
But when I do get a window where I can disappear into something, there are a few things that pull me in completely.
The first one is movies.
I collect 4K and Blu-ray films, and when I watch them I like going through the extras. Sometimes the behind-the-scenes documentaries are just as interesting as the movie itself.
It feels like getting a second layer of the story.
The second thing is writing.
When I was younger, writing wasn’t enjoyable to me. It felt like something teachers forced you to do.
Now it’s different.
I’m choosing to do it.
Writing has become a way for me to organize my thoughts and get things out of my head.
Another thing I’ve started exploring is psychology.
I bought Carl Jung’s The Red Book. The funny thing is I didn’t even know who Jung was when I bought it.
I was walking through Barnes & Noble looking at movies they had on sale, and I saw this big red book in the psychology section. It looked interesting, so I bought it.
Later I found out Carl Jung is one of the most important psychologists ever.
Lately I’ve also been trying to build my own illustration pipeline.
I’m experimenting with thumbnails and ideas, trying to figure out how to turn thoughts into images — and eventually into animation.
It’s harder than I expected.
But that’s part of the process.
So when I do have time, those are the things I tend to lose myself in:
movies, writing, psychology, and drawing.
None of them feel like work.
They feel like exploration.
