Yeah. I’ve broken the law before—not on purpose at first, but I ended up there.
I got in a car accident in my early twenties and I didn’t have insurance. I couldn’t pay for it, and my license got suspended. I didn’t know how to fix it, and instead of handling it right away… I kept driving.
One night I drove from Los Angeles out past Riverside—far as hell—to see my girlfriend. Her mom was at some convention, and I remember the hotel had a buffalo out front. A real one. Native American conference vibes. I was like, what the hell is my life?
Anyway, I stayed the night and then drove back around 2 or 3 in the morning.
On the way back, I hit a DUI checkpoint—one of those where traffic crawls and they stop every car. I was sweating bullets. I wasn’t drunk, but I had a suspended license. My hands were sweating so much I still remember it. The gold highway lights were hitting the car and everything felt like slow motion.
Then I pulled up.
The officer: “License and registration. Where you coming from? Where you headed?”
I answered everything. Polite. Normal. Calm on the outside.
He flashed the light in my eyes, checked if I looked okay, then looked at my license… looked at me… looked at the license… looked at me.
I swear time stretched.
Then he handed everything back and said: “Alright. Have a great night. Drive safe.”
When I drove away, I took the deepest breath of my life. I was like, oh my God… he could’ve taken my car and taken me to jail.
A year later I fixed it through a lawyer. But yeah—repairing a wrecked car is hard.
Repairing a wrecked life is harder.
But it’s doable.
Question: Have you ever had a moment where you realized, damn… this could’ve gone very different?
