“E.T., Conan, and the Soundtrack of My Childhood”

Daily writing prompt
What makes you feel nostalgic?

What makes me nostalgic is films.

Movies like E.T. — I used to love that movie as a little kid. I cried when I thought E.T. was gonna die.

Conan the Barbarian too. I remember sitting in front of the TV watching Conan swing that sword and kill that big old snake. I remember my mom feeding me mac and cheese with steak and a baked potato. Hair combed to the side because I wanted to be Superman. I loved his haircut. I thought he was badass. I had asthma and he didn’t. He was a bad motherfucker — and that stuck with me.

And the music back then? Man… when I had a flat top, you’d hear MC Hammer — “Can’t Touch This” everywhere. Every party on the block had that song. Boom. Boom. Boom.

Then you got the Ninja Turtles — the animated series, then the movies — and that whole era of Vanilla Ice “Ice Ice Baby.” My neighbor, another little kid, would do The Running Man. That was the shit, my doggie.

That’s what brings me nostalgia: VHS tapes, cassette tapes. I had the “Ice Ice Baby” tape on cassette — I didn’t even know what I was buying. I was just a kid telling my dad, “Get me that,” because I heard it and wanted it. I’d put my headphones on, bob my head, and feel like I was part of something.

Then later it was a CD player.

Same feeling. New format.

Question: What’s one movie, song, or smell that can instantly take you back?
