Echoes of the Garage

Fragments of life in Los Angeles — art, film, street stories, and the quiet rebuilding of a man. Start here: Best OfAboutSubscribe.

“My Father, the Bulldozer, and 6 A.M.”

I’m usually asking for more time to make art — and today, I got my wish.

My alarm went off at 6 a.m., same as always. I turned onto my back, eyes still closed — I didn’t want to wake up.

I should mention: I’ve been dealing with insomnia for nearly a decade. The last time I truly slept well was in Cancún, back in 2022. Maybe I just needed a break from the Los Angeles air — or maybe I needed distance from everything else. But that’s another story.

Outside, heavy machines were ripping concrete. The city decided to redo the sidewalk in front of the house, and they had to tear out the old tree whose roots had been lifting the pavement.

Then the phone rang — my dad.

“Move the van out so I can move mine. They’re starting to cut in front of the driveway.”

And just like that, the day began.

Now I’m here, typing while watching The Mighty Mouse Podcast, thinking — I still haven’t drawn, even though I woke up at six.

I will, right after finishing this entry.

I’ll end this with this thought — I haven’t had peace in about a decade. I guess I’m learning to live with it and keep building.

It just hit me: when I was a kid, I used to watch Doogie Howser, M.D. He’d always close the episode by typing a journal entry.

Funny how life loops back like that.
