Question: Why does GTA V still feel alive 13 years later—and what does it remind you about your own life right now?
📓Jan 14, 2026 — 9:59 AM (Wednesday)
GTA V feels older now, not because it’s bad, but because the last time I beat it was 2013—and that’s 13 years ago. I beat it with my then-girlfriend, loved it, finished it, and moved on. I never got into the online stuff. I don’t like playing online anymore, and I didn’t want to get stuck in it.
But during the New Year sale on PlayStation, I saw GTA V for $20 and thought, fuck it—let me see what it feels like now. The last time I played it was on a PS3 with a regular TV. Now I’m on a PS5 and an LG C1 OLED and it’s crazy how different it feels. The contrast pops. The night scenes hit. Everything is smoother. And the acting… the acting feels like you’re playing a movie again.
What surprised me most is I don’t even want to rush it now. I want to play it slow—walk around, look at the neighborhoods, listen to the ambience, take in the world. And maybe that’s because I live in LA and I recognize the energy. I’m from South Central. I know the liquor store on the corner vibe. I know Figueroa—the Blade—heels on the sidewalk, pimps posted up, the whole ecosystem. I know downtown, the homeless, the Art District, East LA… all that texture.
Back in 2013, I wasn’t living like I’m living now. I wasn’t doing deliveries eight to ten hours a day. I wasn’t in all these neighborhoods every day talking to everybody—Korean, Indian, Latino, white, whoever. Now I am. So playing GTA again feels like looking at real life through a video game filter. Same city energy, different era of my life.
And it reminds me of something I don’t want to ignore: sometimes you don’t see what something is until you’ve lived more life. Same game. Same city. Different eyes.
Today’s rep: I’ll do one real-life rep before I game—one task that moves my life forward.
Reader question: What’s something you revisited years later that hit completely different?
